Description

Wormwood is a bitter, silvery green herb long associated with protection, spirit contact, and psychic clarity. Its history is steeped in both folklore and magickal tradition, and it has earned its place on many ancestor altars, in protective blends, and in divination rites. At Wax Spiritual, our wormwood is offered in its dried, loose botanical form—ideal for use in incense, mojo bags, spellwork, or altar offerings.

This herb is traditionally used to repel unwanted energies and strengthen psychic vision. In many European folk traditions, wormwood was hung above doorways to keep spirits or illness from entering the home. In other contexts, it was carried for protection during travel—especially through spiritual territory or liminal spaces.

In conjure and folk magick, wormwood is used for:

  • Protection from spirits or harmful energy
  • Opening the third eye or enhancing divination
  • Spirit communication and ancestor veneration
  • Reversing hexes and energetic malice
  • Breaking bonds to unwanted people, habits, or spiritual attachments

Its name is no coincidence. Wormwood is energetically bitter—it is uninviting to parasitic spirits, obsessive thoughts, and psychic noise. When burned in small amounts as incense (always with good ventilation), it’s believed to clear a space and call in ancestral spirits with respectful intent.

It pairs well with mugwort, hyssop, myrrh, or copal when creating loose incense blends for ritual cleansing or psychic work. Wormwood may be burned in very small amounts as incense during ritual or divination, but always in a well-ventilated space and never around children, pets, or those who are pregnant or have respiratory conditions. In dream magick, it is sometimes placed under the pillow—though always with care, as its potency can disturb sleep as easily as it can enhance vision.

Caution: Wormwood is toxic in large doses and should never be ingested unless under supervision by a qualified herbalist. It contains thujone, a compound known to affect the nervous system. Not suitable for use by pregnant people or those with seizure disorders. Always wash your hands after handling.

At Wax Spiritual, we offer wormwood as part of our ritual herb range, for external use in spellwork only. This is a herb for those walking between the worlds, seeking clarity, protection, or guidance from beyond.

Use it with respect, especially when inviting in the dead, and always protect yourself when working with the unseen.
