Screams and Purrs is an 8 x 10 inch art print from Kat Philbin’s original Horror Cats series, first created in 2014 for a Wes Craven tribute show at Hyaena Gallery in Burbank. What began as two playful pieces, Screams and Purrs and Dreams and Fur, has since grown into a much-loved collection where horror icons meet unapologetic feline chaos.
In this illustration, a robed, masked figure finds themselves completely overtaken by cats. One perches on their head, another dangles mid-air, others lounge comfortably across their lap and legs. The dramatic, elongated scream of the mask contrasts beautifully with the soft, indifferent calm of the cats. The tension of the original film reference dissolves into something absurd and oddly sweet.
There is something very charming about the balance here. The black cloak creates a bold silhouette, grounding the composition, while the warm ginger tones and soft greys of the cats bring movement and warmth. It feels playful rather than parody-heavy, affectionate rather than mocking.
This print works wonderfully in relaxed, personality-filled homes. It suits horror fans who enjoy a knowing nod to cult cinema, but it also appeals to anyone whose house is ruled by cats.
