The Council Convenes (on the Matter of the Apocalypse) – 8 x 10″ Art Print by Kat Philbin

The Council Convenes (on the Matter of the Apocalypse) is an 8 x 10 inch art print by Los Angeles artist Kat Philbin, created for her 2020 solo exhibition 13 Foxes and the End of the World. Printed in California on textured Sundance watercolour card stock, the surface has a soft, tactile quality that enhances the muted greys and glowing reds within the artwork. Each print is packaged in a protective plastic sleeve and finished with a logo sticker on the reverse.

The scene is theatrical yet strangely tender. Beneath a bold, red sun suspended in a pale sky, a gathering of foxes forms a loose circle around a central masked figure. The trees are bare, the earth dark, and the atmosphere feels suspended in a quiet, expectant hush. Despite the dramatic title, there is humour woven into the composition. The foxes lounge, sit upright, lean, and observe with a mixture of curiosity and calm. It feels like a meeting that may be both terribly important and slightly absurd.

The limited colour palette gives the piece a graphic, almost storybook quality. The red tones glow against the subdued landscape, drawing the eye upward to the sun and back down to the figures below. It would sit beautifully in interiors that lean toward modern gothic, literary, or eclectic styling. Think dark painted walls, worn wood frames, antique books, and soft lamplight. It also works unexpectedly well in lighter, minimalist spaces where the single red sun becomes a striking focal point.

This print will resonate with lovers of folklore, quiet dystopian imagery, and art that balances darkness with wit. It feels thoughtful rather than bleak, imaginative rather than alarming. Like much of Kat Philbin’s work, it allows the viewer to decide the tone. Is it ominous, hopeful, satirical, or quietly profound? There are no fixed answers.
