Are Hexes and Curses Real?
Hexes and curses are real, but what if something deeper is actually at play?
This post will hopefully be a remedy to that, because whilst retrogrades can bring surprises, they don’t have to be scary or a time where you feel constantly on edge.
Over the years of walking a spiritually guided path, I have experienced, witnessed, and supported many people who feel that things are simply not going right in their lives. There is often a persistent sense that everything is working against them, or even experiences that feel paranormal, bordering on haunting.
The common themes I hear are:
- Relationships breaking down
- Money is not flowing with ease or abundance
- Constant fatigue or unexplained physical ailments, despite investigation
So what does it mean to be cursed?
According to Deuteronomy 28, as synthesised by the Bible Project, a curse is:
“Being under divine judgment, separated from God’s favour, or experiencing the consequences of disobedience, resulting in hardship, destruction, or separation from God. It is the opposite of a blessing, often invoking misery or evil upon someone or something as a formal consequence of violating God’s laws.”
What we often notice is the feeling that arises when we perceive the opposite of a blessing taking place in our lives. Naturally, this creates discomfort, confusion, and pain, and we seek to resolve it.
This is usually the moment where someone says, “I’ve been cursed,” or “someone has done something to me.”
And whilst, on some occasions, this may be true, in my experience, it is not common.
What is often actually happening?
What I have consistently observed is a missing element: self-reflection and accountability before assumption and blame.
When I work with people, what initially presents as a “curse” often becomes a moment of reckoning, an awakening. A call to look at the parts of the self that may be stuck, neglected, or reinforcing cycles, rather than evidence of something external being done to them.
The deeper meaning of “disobedience”
In the definition above, there is a reference to experiencing the consequences of disobedience. In my practice, this shows up time and time again, not as disobedience to an external force, but as a betrayal, a disobedience of the self.
A misalignment with one’s own inner personal code.
This “personal code” is the set of values, truths, and paths your higher self aligns with.
In practical, everyday terms, this can look like:
- Disobeying your own truth or honesty
- Ignoring your creative calling
- Overindulging in substances that disconnect you
- Staying in situations that go against your inner knowing
We are not taught to know our own code
For each of us, this personal code will look different. Yet we are rarely taught to take the time to understand it.
Instead, collectively, we are more inclined to label hardship as a curse, rather than recognising it as an invitation to repair the fractures within our own alignment.
We overlook the possibility that what we are experiencing is a pattern or cycle waiting to be broken.

A personal reflection
There have been times in my own life where I made decisions based on safety and security, rather than following my personal code of spiritual alignment and creative freedom.
These decisions were rooted in fear. And while they created a temporary sense of stability, they ultimately disrupted the natural flow of abundance in my life.
Choosing environments where I could survive rather than thrive limited my growth.
For a period of time, I perceived this as a curse:
- A curse of my birth chart
- A curse within my ancestry
Until I realised that I was simply making choices that were out of alignment with my own code.
That realisation didn’t end the experience, but it changed where I began looking for answers.
Why we default to the idea of a curse
Looking inward requires honesty, and that isn’t always easy.
- Believing we are cursed can feel easier
- It removes responsibility
- It externalises the problem
- It allows us to avoid sitting with uncomfortable truths
It’s also important to recognise that much of what we see on social media and within pop culture is rooted in fear-based narratives. The idea of curses is often sensationalised because it captures attention and drives engagement.
What may actually be showing up instead
What we often label as a curse can instead be:
Repeating Patterns
- The same types of relationships
- Ongoing financial struggles
- Recurring emotional cycles
Conditioned Beliefs
- “Nothing ever works out for me”
- “I’m always unlucky”
Lack of Boundaries / Self-Responsibility
- Remaining in harmful situations
- Avoiding necessary decisions
Ancestral or Learned Patterns
- Inherited behaviours and cycles, not curses, but patterns
Physical & Practical Factors
- Stress, burnout, environment
- Health, finances, lifestyle
A Balanced Perspective
This is not to say that protection work is unnecessary. In fact, it should be part of your spiritual hygiene.
However, it is equally important to go deeper and explore the root cause of your experiences before attributing them to an external force.
Yes, curses can occur. But any reputable spiritual practitioner will first guide you to examine the underlying patterns, behaviours, and misalignments at play.
Final Note
Perhaps it is time to reshape how we understand curses.
Instead of immediately assuming something has been done to us, we can begin by asking:
- What is my own personal code?
- Where am I out of alignment with my own code?
- What actions or decisions am I making that go against my own code?
- What patterns am I being asked to see?
- What responsibility am I being invited to take?
What feels like a curse may, in fact, be a call to return to yourself.
