Description
Texas Chainsaw Meowssacre is an 8 x 10 inch art print from Kat Philbin’s much-loved Horror Cats series. What began in 2014 as a pair of tribute illustrations for a Wes Craven show at Hyaena Gallery in Burbank has grown into a playful collection of horror and horror-adjacent icons, each gently undone by the presence of cats.
This piece takes a cult horror character and softens the edges entirely. Instead of dread, we’re given pastel tones, round faces, and kittens in various states of bliss, mischief and indifference. The central figure may be infamous, but here he is reduced to something oddly domestic, surrounded by cats who seem far more concerned with string, naps, and general feline chaos than cinematic terror.
The humour is subtle rather than loud. It’s clever without being try-hard. Horror fans will recognise the reference immediately, while cat lovers may simply appreciate the sweetness of the composition. It feels like a piece for people who enjoy contrast, those who can watch a slasher film and then curl up with their pet on the sofa.
At 8 x 10 inches, it makes a statement without dominating a wall. It works beautifully in cosy flats filled with film memorabilia, in home offices with a bit of personality, or on a gallery wall that mixes gothic prints with playful, tongue-in-cheek pieces. The light colour palette makes it easy to frame and layer into existing décor.
Kat Philbin, originally from rural Southwest Missouri and now based in Los Angeles, has built The Stupid Animal Shop into a globally loved brand over the past fifteen years. Her work balances horror and whimsy with ease, allowing even the darkest references to feel strangely comforting.
After all, they may be bad… but who can resist a bunch of kitty cats?
