Bhaktapur Clay Incense Stick Burner

A traditional-style pottery incense holder crafted in Bhaktapur, Nepal, an area long associated with ceramic craftsmanship and its historic Pottery Square.

Made from warm terracotta clay, the burner has a simple rounded form with a raised central opening designed to hold an incense stick securely while it burns. Small pierced details around the upper section add to its handmade, rustic appearance, making each piece feel suited to both everyday incense burning and a dedicated spiritual space.

Burning Incense Sticks
Incense sticks are one of the simplest ways to incorporate fragrance and smoke into meditation, prayer, ritual or everyday practice.
To use, place the burner on a stable, heat-resistant surface and insert the incense stick into the central opening. Light the tip of the stick, allow it to catch briefly, then gently extinguish the flame so the incense continues to smoulder.
As the stick burns, ash will fall naturally around the burner, so always position it somewhere suitable and away from fabrics, papers or other flammable materials.

Incense may be used simply for fragrance or incorporated into:
– Meditation
– Prayer and devotional practice
– Altar work
– Personal ritual
– Preparing a spiritual space
– Quiet reflection
– Everyday home fragrance

How and why incense is used will depend entirely on your own practice.

Traditional Pottery from Bhaktapur
Bhaktapur is one of Nepal’s historic cities and is particularly known for Pottery Square, where pottery remains an important part of local craft tradition.

The plain terracotta finish of this burner allows the material and shape to speak for themselves. Rather than being heavily decorated, it has an uncomplicated, earthy appearance that works comfortably alongside candles, altar tools, statues, incense and other ritual objects.

Small irregularities in colour, texture and finish are part of the character of traditional pottery rather than defects.
