FAQs on Ancestral Connection

Dec 17, 2025 | Blog

One of the most asked questions I have received over the years is, “How do I connect to my ancestors?” There is no straightforward answer to this, as something we often need to remember is how individual our familial lines are. The experiences we have in waking life may have parallels and overlap, but they still hold variations from person to person. We all come from different cultural backgrounds and lineages, and the ways in which we connect to our ancestors will reflect these differences within us as individuals and as humans.

This post forms as an FAQ to some of the questions I receive most often about ancestral connection and aims to empower you to trust in the unfolding of your own journey with your ancestors.

What are ancestors?

Your ancestors are people within, or deeply connected to, your bloodline who had a physical existence and have since transitioned from the living world.

What is their role? / What is the point of connecting to my ancestors?

It is important to remember that ancestors once lived just as we do, though it may have been many lifetimes ago. As a result, they carry their stories, lived experiences, wisdom, lessons, blessings, and pain gained through both living and transition.
Knowing this, ancestors are usually connected to us to serve as guides on the path we have committed to, to encourage the preservation or continuation of their legacy, or to assist with familial clearing and healing. We often talk about breaking generational patterns and cycles, and being in connection with your ancestors is one way to support that process, especially as there may be subconscious patterns persisting from previous lineages that you may not be aware of.

FAQs on Ancestral Connection

How can I connect to my ancestors?

Connecting to your ancestors is a deeply personal experience and ultimately depends on your family makeup as well as the customs and traditions set by your lineage. However, it requires trust, time, reverence, and an openness to be supported. What if I have ancestors who did harm or were “bad” in their lifetime?

If you are aware of ancestors who may have acted harmfully or hold beliefs and values that oppose your own and the direction of change you are committed to, you can choose not to connect with them. If you know them by name, state this clearly in your declaration. If you do not know them by name, you can simply state that any ancestors who have caused or committed harm, or who are not aligned with your values, should step aside. It is important to be as clear as possible anytime you are calling on any externalised source within the etheric realms.

What if I am estranged from my family?

If you are estranged from your family or do not know your origins, it is still completely okay to connect with your ancestors if you desire. You have the right to permit yourself to do so. It may be advisable to begin with curiosity, seek to learn about your ancestral line before placing requests or petitions.

If ancestors or guides exist, why do bad things still happen to me?

Connecting to your ancestors is not a failsafe blueprint ensuring everything goes well in life. While your ancestors may assist, they also understand what it is to live a human experience. They have the patience and knowing that in life we may choose to experience certain hardships as part of our growth, learning, and unfolding.

Do I have one ancestor with me across life?

You may have an ancestor who remains a consistent guide throughout your life. However, it is equally likely that different ancestors will step forward in different seasons of your life to support you, depending on your present experiences. For example, if you are going through relationship stress, an ancestor who sustained a healthy partnership may become part of your council.
What can I expect from connecting with my ancestors?
You may begin your ancestral reconnection journey seeking support, but that may not be what you receive initially. Connecting with your ancestors is like cultivating any relationship in the flesh; it takes time and requires effort and energy. You may experience emotional, mental, or spiritual shedding, which may appear as lessons or losses before you reach a stage of reaping blessings.

For some, this process may feel harsh or isolating. However, this can also be part of the soul’s transformation and evolution. Please seek guidance and support if that is the case.
