Description
The Oracle of Forgotten Witches by Balazs Tatrai & Lilla Bölecz
The Oracle of Forgotten Witches is a richly atmospheric 60-card oracle deck that journeys through witchcraft, folklore, mythology, spirits, magical figures, and legendary beings from cultures around the world. Created by Balazs Tatrai and Lilla Bölecz, the deck combines divination with storytelling and the symbolism of spiritual alchemy, inviting readers to encounter figures both familiar and far less commonly represented within modern oracle decks.
Rather than presenting every figure simply as a ‘witch’, the deck draws upon a much broader world of folklore and mythology. Among its cards are the Greek goddess Hecate, the Welsh enchantress Ceridwen, Norse ravens Hugin and Munin, Finnish Louhi, Japanese kitsune and Yuki-onna, the Slavic Baba Yaga, the Irish Cailleach, historical New Orleans Voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau, and numerous spirits, magical beings, legendary people, places, objects, and traditions. Their original cultural identities differ considerably, making the deck an intriguing starting point for further study as well as divination.
The 60 cards are organised into ten suits, forming a symbolic journey influenced by spiritual alchemy: Curse-bringers, Shape-shifters, Survivors, Avengers, Mesmerizers, Well-wishers, Alchemists, Revenants, Nature Witches and Fate-turners. Each examines a different aspect of experience, moving through themes including shadow, transformation, survival, consequences, deception, healing, knowledge, transition, relationships and destiny.
This alchemical structure gives the deck an unusual depth. The traditional alchemical idea of transforming base material into something refined is interpreted here as inner transformation, encouraging the reader to confront difficult aspects of themselves, recognise their abilities and consider what might need to change.
Four specially created spreads provide different approaches to readings. The Hecate Spread uses the symbolic dagger, torch and key to consider obstacles, truths that must be faced and actions that can open the way forward. The Pentagram Spread examines a situation through spirit and the four classical elements. The Magnum Opus Spread follows stages of spiritual alchemy, while the wonderfully unusual Storyweaving Spread uses the cards to create an original folktale before interpreting that story much like a dream.
This storytelling element makes The Oracle of Forgotten Witches particularly interesting for intuitive readers. It can be used for traditional oracle readings, shadow work, journalling, meditation, creative writing, folklore study, spiritual reflection or simply discovering lesser-known figures from magical history and legend.
Dark, folkloric and beautifully illustrated, this is a distinctive oracle for witches, folklore enthusiasts and readers drawn to the stranger corners of mythology.
