Drawing together personal experience, historical material and stories gathered through encounters with Black Madonnas around the world, she examines the relationship between spirituality, colonialism, race, gender and power.
But this is not simply a history of religious iconography. The Black Madonna is also an invitation into practice.
Each chapter includes invocations and rituals intended to help readers develop their own relationship with Black Madonna, particularly during periods of burnout, disillusionment or spiritual disconnection. Cleveland explores surrender not as passivity, but as allowing ourselves to be nourished and restored; belonging without requiring permission from institutions; and spiritual practice as something capable of sustaining resistance rather than merely offering escape from the world around us.
