ASTALI: Porcupine Quill Earrings, Recycled Brass and South African Quills, 4.25″–5.5″

The Porcupine Quill Earrings by ASTALI are a striking fusion of nature and craft, pairing the sleek beauty of genuine South African porcupine quills with recycled .22 calibre bullet casings. Handmade in Los Angeles by designer Shannon De Jong, each earring dangles between 4.25 and 5.5 inches in length, depending on the natural variation of the quills. The tips are capped with brass beads for safety and finish, and they hang elegantly from antique-brass earwires, creating a design that is both bold and graceful.

The quills used in these earrings are ethically sourced, collected after natural shedding. No animals are ever harvested in the process. In nature, the porcupine symbolises protection, self-reliance, and quiet strength. Its quills serve as a natural defence, yet they are shed and renewed throughout the animal’s life, making them a fitting emblem of resilience and regeneration. When combined with reclaimed bullet casings, this piece transforms two symbols of defence into an expression of balance and peace.

Each bullet casing is gathered from shooting ranges and repurposed by hand. ASTALI’s work does not glamorise weaponry or violence. Instead, it celebrates the power of reclamation — reimagining discarded materials into sustainable jewellery that reflects awareness, responsibility, and transformation.

Due to the natural variation in size, tone, and pattern, each pair is entirely unique. The quills range from pale ivory to warm brown, with organic markings that tell their own story of origin and individuality.
