Pagan Portals – Hecate, Goddess of Magick and Witchcraft
Pagan Portals – Hecate, Goddess of Magick and Witchcraft by Irisanya Moon is an accessible introduction to one of the ancient world’s most enduring and complex goddesses. Combining historical understanding with contemporary devotional practice, this 160-page book offers exercises, spells, trances, and rituals for those wishing to learn about Hecate and begin developing a personal spiritual relationship with her.
Hecate – also written Hekate – is an ancient Greek goddess whose associations developed considerably over centuries. Early sources give her an unusually broad sphere of influence: in Hesiod’s Theogony, she is honoured across earth, sea, and heaven. Later Greek and Roman traditions increasingly connect her with witchcraft, magic, ghosts, the night, boundaries, and crossroads. She is also closely associated with Persephone and the Underworld, accompanying Demeter during the search for her daughter and later becoming Persephone’s companion.
Her most recognisable symbols include torches, representing her role as a light-bringer and guide through darkness, and dogs, animals strongly connected with her ancient worship and mythology. Hecate was also represented in triple form, particularly at crossroads, with three bodies or faces looking in different directions. Small shrines and images known as hekataia were historically placed at entrances, boundaries, and crossroads.
These ancient associations continue to influence the ways modern witches, Pagans, and polytheists work with Hecate. Contemporary devotional practices may include lighting candles or torches, maintaining an altar, offering prayers or hymns, leaving appropriate offerings, meditation, divination, spirit work, and rituals concerned with thresholds, transitions, protection, personal sovereignty, and navigating periods of change.
There is also historical precedent for food offerings to Hecate at crossroads. In ancient Athens, offerings were placed at the end of the lunar month, a practice commonly associated today with Hecate’s Deipnon. Modern practitioners interpret and adapt these traditions in different ways, and there is no single required method of devotion.
Irisanya Moon approaches Hecate as a goddess encountered at life’s literal and symbolic crossroads. Through guided trances, spells, practices, and immersive exercises, readers are encouraged to consider themes of choice, transformation, power, darkness, illumination, and finding a way forward without expecting the goddess simply to choose the path for them.
Part of the Pagan Portals series, this compact book is particularly suited to readers beginning their study of Hecate, as well as witches and Pagan practitioners wanting to deepen an existing devotional practice.
