Description
This Our Lady of Guadalupe Nicho Window is a traditional devotional piece, handmade in Guatemala and rooted in Latin American folk Catholic practice. Nichos are small shrine-style boxes, often used in homes as protective symbols, prayer spaces, or expressions of gratitude. This piece features an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe set within a painted metal window shrine, complete with opening glass doors and a decorative cross finial at the top.
Within Catholic and Mexican spiritual traditions, Our Lady of Guadalupe is associated with compassion, maternal protection, and spiritual reassurance. She is believed to offer comfort to those seeking guidance, strength during hardship, and a sense of being spiritually accompanied. Her image is also deeply tied to cultural identity, resistance, and faith, particularly following her appearance to Juan Diego in 1531, a story recognised by the Catholic Church and honoured widely across Mexico and Central America.
Within devotional traditions, the glass doors are believed to symbolise reflection, self-examination, and opening oneself to prayer. When closed, the nicho offers quiet containment and protection. When opened, it creates a focused visual space for contemplation, prayer, or remembrance. These pieces are often placed on home altars, near doorways, or in private devotional corners.
Each nicho is painted by hand, resulting in subtle variations in colour, pattern, and finish. Available in yellow, teal, or blue, each colour is sold separately and selected intuitively by many practitioners. Minor imperfections are part of the handmade nature of the piece and reflect its artisanal origins.
This item is intended as a decorative and devotional object. It is not designed for outdoor use or for holding candles or open flames.
