A spell book does not need to begin as a finished system. For many practitioners, it develops gradually: a working record of spells that have been tried, rituals that have changed over time, correspondences worth returning to, observations from divination, recipes, prayers, dreams and pieces of knowledge gathered through experience.
The completely blank, unlined pages leave the format open to you. Write continuously, divide the book into sections, add illustrations and diagrams, press botanicals between the pages, record candle workings, or create your own system of symbols and correspondences.

Spell Book, Grimoire or Book of Shadows?
These terms are sometimes used interchangeably today, although they can carry different meanings depending on the practitioner and tradition.
A grimoire is generally understood as a book containing magical knowledge, instructions, rituals, correspondences or spells. A personal spell book may be much less formal, containing the workings and information an individual actually uses.
Book of Shadows has particular roots within Wicca, where it traditionally refers to a collection of rituals, teachings and practices, although the term is now also used more broadly by some witches for their personal magical journal.
There is no need to decide what your book must become before you begin. It can simply grow alongside your practice.
Design & Materials
The deep brown board cover is engraved with a pentacle surrounded by phases of the moon, giving the book a traditional witchcraft-inspired appearance without filling the interior with a predetermined system.
A twine fastening keeps the book closed, while the exposed aged-metal hinges form part of its deliberately rustic construction. Inside are plain, lightly textured pages made from recycled paper.
The substantial board covers make it particularly suited to a working book intended to be kept, added to and returned to over time rather than an ordinary disposable notebook.
Each book is handmade in Indonesia, supporting Fair Trade artisans and more sustainable use of materials. As a handmade item, small variations in finish and construction are part of its character.
